A dental bridge is an artificial tooth or hollow crown used as replacement of missing teeth. In a gap between two teeth, a ‘bridge’ is placed in this space hence ‘bridging’ the two teeth together.

This involves a preparation of a crown by your dentist to fit in between the two teeth using a mould. This may necessitate chipping away of the edges of the two teeth to pave way for the crown. Anaesthesia is advised in this process. The impression of the teeth is then taken using“dental putty” which is then sent to the local laboratory for fabrication. A temporary bridge is then prepared by the dentist, which can be worn to the period when the actual crown will be ready.

Finaly, on the next visit, the dentist determines the key aspects such as color, fitting and the effect on your bite. Once satisfied, the dentist then cements the crown. A properly cared for crown is expected to last upto 10 years.

However, alternatives to bridges include less stable dentures or a more permanent and invasive dental implant.
