The Procedure
This involves the removal of tooth decay and the subsequent reshaping of the tooth to an appropriate shape. This will involve the gradual grinding or chipping away of the tooth to allow the tooth to fit in the crown properly. This is done under anaesthesia to ease and eliminate discomfort.
First, the dentist prepares a demonstration of the teeth by use of “dental putty” which is used to determine the crown size for perfect fitting. For immediacy, the dentist can prepare a temporary crown usually made from porcelain for the patient to wear while the actual crown is being processed. This usually takes an hour.
Then the mould is then sent to the laboratory for fabrication. This can take upto three weeks and the patient is awarded the privilege to determine the material he/she would prefer for the crown.
Finaly, after fabrication, the dentist conducts a check up to ensure authenticity of result, right size and color and then proceeds with the cementing process to place the crown in place. A good dental crown will last upto 10-15 years.
